# Monterey Pop: A Rock Festival That Rocked the World and Jimi Hendrix's Iconic Performance
Monterey Pop remains one of the most renowned rock festivals in history. It was a musical melting pot, bringing together sounds that resonated deeply with young Americans.
Some talents were relatively unknown in the US before, like Otis Redding and Jimi Hendrix. Others were already huge, such as The Who, Simon & Garfunkel, and Mamas and the Papas. And let's not forget Ravi Shankar's breakthrough performance.
Twenty years or so after the release of the feature film, Hendrix and the Experience made their mark. Having been cult favorites in the UK, they brought their unique sound to Monterey Pop for the first time.
The concert may not be long, but it's undoubtedly one of Hendrix's most infamous. Rumors circulated (truth uncertain as I've not read concert biographies) that Hendrix was on acid during his set. Regardless, the songs captured by DA Pennebaker (with assistance from Albert Maysles) in stunning documentary detail are captivating.
Beyond the oft - shown guitar - burning after "Wild Thing," there are incredible renditions of "Like a Rolling Stone," "Hey Joe," and a beautiful take on "The Wind Cries Mary."
While more interviews would have been great, "Jimi Plays Monterey" is a wonderful companion to the film.
