Recorded live at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome in February 2001 (Symphonies 1 - 8) and at the Philharmonie in Berlin on 1 May 2000 (Symphony 9), these recordings are a high point of Abbado's tenure with the Berlin Philharmonic. La Repubblica hailed it as “The most wonderful symphonic cycle of the past decade.”

Each symphony is a Beethoven masterpiece, showing different stages of his musical evolution. Abbado's interpretations, born from decades of study, are brought to life by the Berlin Philharmonic.
