## Creation History
"The Merry Widow" (German: *Die lustige Witwe*) is a three-act operetta by Austro-Hungarian composer Franz Lehár. The libretto by Victor Leon and Leo Stein is based on the comedy *L’attaché d’ambassade* by French dramatist Henri Meilhac (1862).

The original libretto was inspired by Meilhac's play. During adaptation, the librettists replaced a small German principality with the Balkan state of Pontevedro (or Montenegro). Also, all names were changed to Slavic ones. In the early 20th century, Montenegro owed huge sums to Austrian and other banks, and this motif is ironically played out in the operetta.

Initially, in 1904, 55-year-old Richard Heuberger was commissioned to write the music. However, the results were unsatisfactory, and the contract was given to Lehár. But even his version faced issues. Lehár later recalled that when the theater directors heard the first few bars of his music, they covered their ears and shouted it was terrible, not music, and a sign of bankruptcy. They wanted the Viennese charm in every operetta. The directors even offered Lehár 5000 kronen to drop the contract. But the actors, who had rehearsed the show with enthusiasm, supported the young composer.

The operetta premiered at the Vienna theater "An der Wien" on December 30, 1905, to a resounding success. In Russia, the premiere was on September 23, 1906, at the Petersburg theater "Passage". Russian productions often included an additional number, "The Swings", composed by Holländer. "The Merry Widow" is rightly called the "queen of operettas" due to its witty libretto and charming music. It has been filmed multiple times and also inspired a ballet.

## Plot
### Act I
The Pontevedro (Montenegro) embassy in Paris hosts a ball for the duke's birthday. But the ambassador, Baron Zeta, is worried as the duchy is on the verge of bankruptcy. If Hanna Glawari, the widow of a wealthy Pontevedrian banker, marries a foreigner, 20 million of the country's wealth will leave. Baron Zeta eyes Count Danilo, the third secretary, as a potential groom. Hanna arrives, surrounded by suitors, while Danilo is found in a café and brought to the embassy, where he falls asleep on a couch. Meanwhile, Baroness Zeta's wife, Valencienne, flirts with the French attaché, Count Camille de Rosillon. She tells him not to speak of love, so he writes his confession on her fan, which she later loses. Hanna's arrival wakes Danilo. They were once in love, but Danilo's family opposed the marriage. Now, Danilo avoids her.

### Act II
At Hanna Glawari's house, guests enjoy national dances, and Hanna sings the famous "Song of the Vilia". Baron Zeta finds the fan with the love confession and wonders whose it is. Danilo takes it and recognizes Camille's handwriting but keeps it secret. The fan is again lost and ends up with Hanna, who thinks it's Danilo's confession. Meanwhile, Valencienne and Camille are alone in the summer pavilion. Unfortunately, Baron Zeta calls a meeting there. He sees them through the keyhole. As he creates a scene, Valencienne escapes, and Hanna takes her place, announcing her engagement to Camille to save her friend's honor.

### Act III
In Hanna's garden, the widow calms Danilo and reveals the truth about the pavilion incident. To remove his pride, she tells everyone about a clause in her husband's will: if she remarries, she loses her fortune. Danilo immediately confesses his love, and Hanna adds that the fortune will go to her new husband.
