# The Unlikely Sci-Fi Opera Sensation: Hector Berlioz's 'Benvenuto Cellini'
Critic Marianne Zelger-Vogt of Neue Zürcher Zeitung raves, “A blend of ‘Metropolis’-style futurism, ‘Batman’-esque fantasy, and quotes from Piranesi’s ‘Carceri,’ presented as photo montages, spiced up with... robots, a helicopter, a shark, and a pop star Pope’s winged vehicle.” But she's not talking about a Broadway show. It's a French opera from the 1830s, Hector Berlioz’s “Benvenuto Cellini.”

## Why It Vanished from the Repertoire
This opera had been absent from the operatic scene, partly due to its musical extravagance. So complex, detailed, and imaginative, Berlioz’s contemporaries thought it unperformable and unsingable.

## A New Lease on Life
However, the 2007 Salzburg Festival production changed all that. Under director Philipp Stölzl, conductor Valery Gergiev (the “wild man of music”), with a top-notch cast, the Vienna Philharmonic, and its chorus, it proved those old notions wrong. Stölzl, with his experience in music videos (for Madonna, Mick Jagger etc.), commercials, and films, crafted what Süddeutsche Zeitung called “science fiction for Grand Opera.”
