# Mozart's Lucio Silla: A Youthful Masterpiece Filled with Innovation

In December 1772, when Mozart was not yet seventeen, *Lucio Silla* was created in Milan. Even in this youthful composition, we can spot elements that would later establish this exceptionally-gifted child musician as the greatest composer of all time.

*Lucio Silla*, a neoclassical “opera seria,” shows Mozart already learning to deconstruct and liberate traditional forms of musical drama from archaic conventions. It also prefigures an aesthetic premise Mozart wouldn't fully formulate until ten years later: music should express and reveal the psychological depths of characters, while the libretto's poetry should be its “obedient daughter.”

The opera revolves around the love of Roman dictator Lucio Silla for his enemy's daughter Giunia, who loves the exiled senator Cecilio. After many plot twists, the lovers are married, and Silla gives up his crown.

In this production, tenor Kurt Streit plays Lucio Silla, soprano Patricia Petibon (internationally recognized for numerous Giunia performances) takes on the role of Giunia for the last time, and mezzo-soprano Silvia Tro Santafe is the passionate Cecilio. Claus Guth masterfully respects both the classical setting and formal innovations that make the opera fascinating. Ivor Bolton conducts the Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro Real.
