# The Musical Mojo of Dr. John: A Star-Studded Celebration of New Orleans Music

## A Who's Who of Musical Talent
The stage was set for an unforgettable event as some of the biggest names in music came together to honor Dr. John. Bruce Springsteen joined Dr. John for a duet on the 1973 hit “Right Place Wrong Time”. Jason Isbell delivered a heartfelt “Blow Wind Blow”. John Fogerty performed the raucous “New Orleans”. Mavis Staples brought gospel fervor to “Lay My Burden Down”. Widespread Panic added musical muscle to “Familiar Reality”, and Ryan Bingham gave a haunting rendition of “Back by the River”.

## New Orleans Legends Steal the Show
The event also featured memorable performances from New Orleans legends. Allen Toussaint, Irma Thomas, Terence Blanchard, John Boutté, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, George Porter Jr. and Zigaboo Modeliste of the Meters, and Aaron, Charles and Cyril Neville all graced the stage.

## All-Star House Band
Bassist Don Was served as the musical director, leading an all-star house band. This included Allman Brothers Band/Rolling Stones keyboardist Chuck Leavell, renowned NOLA pianist John Gros, Funky Meters guitarist Brian Stoltz, journeyman drummer Kenny Aronoff, and Dr. John’s long-time musical compatriot, trombonist Sarah Morrow.

## The Event and the Release
On May 3, 2014, at New Orleans’ Saenger Theatre, producer Don Was assembled this star-studded celebration for Dr. John. In October 2016, Concord released it as The Musical Mojo of Dr. John: Celebrating Mac & His Music. It's a double-disc live album with a live concert movie, and it's a blast!

## Musical Diversity on Display
This celebration showcases the breadth of Dr. John’s musical diversity. Alongside New Orleans legends like Irma Thomas and Allen Toussaint, there are straight blues players like Tab Benoit, jazzman Terence Blanchard, Americana star Jason Isbell, jam band stalwarts Widespread Panic and Warren Hayes, and classic rockers Bruce Springsteen and John Fogerty. Through it all, Dr. John remains at the center, even when offstage.
