## Production and Release Timeline
The box set was in the works for several years. Initially expected for the 30th anniversary in 2008, it finally came to fruition. In 2010, on August 4th, it was announced that Springsteen was putting the finishing touches on it. The documentary premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 14, 2010. The “Promise” album is also available separately.
## Awards and Recognition
This box set didn't go unnoticed. It was nominated for and won a 2012 Grammy Award for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package.
## The Album Itself
“Darkness on the Edge of Town” is Springsteen's fourth album, released in late spring 1978. It marked the end of a three-year album gap due to contractual obligations and legal battles with former manager Mike Appel. Despite not having high-charting singles, it stayed on the charts for 97 weeks and has been certified triple-platinum by the RIAA. Reviews were unanimously positive, with critics praising the maturity of its themes and lyrics. It remains one of Springsteen's most highly regarded records, and several of its songs are staples in his live shows.
## Documentary Details
The documentary, directed by Grammy- and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Thom Zimny, combines never-before-seen footage of Springsteen and the E Street Band from 1976 - 1978 (including home rehearsals and studio sessions) with new interviews of key people involved in the album's making. An edited version was broadcast by the BBC.
