## The Story Behind the Opera
Verdi's *Falstaff* is famously based on *The Merry Wives of Windsor*. This great opera by a great composer draws from a work by a great dramatist. However, Shakespeare's play, on which it's founded, has raised some eyebrows. Many Shakespeare scholars suspect that not all of it was penned by the bard himself, as it's clearly not of his best quality.
But Verdi's librettist, Arrigo Boito, worked his magic. He removed some unimportant details, added elements from other, better Shakespearean plays, and crafted a wonderful blend full of sparkling merriment for his friend Verdi.
Even at the age of 80 when the opera was staged, Verdi composed a score brimming with humor. Unlike the long, passionate melodies in his earlier works like *La Traviata* and *Il Trovatore*, *Falstaff* is filled with humor, masterful artistry, and inspiration in every beat.
