Formed in 1996 by vocalist Sharon den Adel and guitarist Robert Westerholt, Within Temptation defied genre norms on the international metal scene. Their sound blends gothic metal, symphonic rock, anarchic pop, melodic metal, and atmospheric progressive rock.

This love for orchestral and symphonic arrangements led to the epic 'Black Symphony'. In February 2008, at the Ahoy Arena in South Holland, they put on a spectacular show.
