# Amorphis: Unveiling the Magic of Finnish Metal
## Band Origins and Evolution
Amorphis, a Finnish heavy metal gem, was founded in 1990 by Jan Rechberger, Tomi Koivusaari, and Esa Holopainen. Starting as a death metal act, the band gracefully evolved, embracing genres like heavy metal, progressive metal, and folk metal. The Finnish epic, Kalevala, serves as a rich source for their lyrics.
## The Early Days and Signing
After recording their first studio demo tape, a unique opportunity knocked. Relapse Records offered Abhorrence a recording contract. As Abhorrence was inactive, Amorphis sent their demo in return and landed a worldwide deal. Soon, their death metal debut, *The Karelian Isthmus*, under the new name Amorphis, hit the scene, followed by the *Privilege of Evil* EP, featuring Abhorrence’s original vocalist Jukka Kolehmainen on “Vulgar Necrolatry”.
## *Tales from the Thousand Lakes*: A Milestone
In 1994, Amorphis released *Tales from the Thousand Lakes*, a concept album inspired by the Kalevala. While still grounded in death metal, it marked a new direction with the addition of melodic clean vocals by Ville Tuomi. This innovative blend of death metal with folk, psychedelia, and progressive elements won the band a loyal fan base and influenced their signature sound.
