## About the Opera
*Faust* stands as Gounod's finest creation and a classic example of French lyric opera. The legend of Doctor Faustus seems to be the perfect plot, attracting both playwrights and composers. Marlowe and Goethe wrote great tragedies on this story. And that's not counting around thirty less prominent playwrights who also created works based on it. Beethoven was once intrigued by the idea of composing an opera on this plot, and Wagner composed the overture *Faust*. Gounod's interpretation of this plot is undoubtedly the most popular of all existing ones and, in many ways, the best. It is based – to a greater extent than most critics admit – on the first part of Goethe's tragedy, and its theme is, of course, the story of an old German scholar-philosopher selling his soul to the devil in exchange for his youth.
