## The Concert Story
On March 15, 2007, Eric Clapton's world tour hit San Diego's iPayOne Center (formerly San Diego Sports Arena, now Valley View Casino Center). The tour's band lineup was a fan-favorite: Derek Trucks and Doyle Bramhall II on guitars, Chris Stainton and Tim Carmon on keyboards, Willie Weeks on bass, Steve Jordan on drums, and backing vocalists Michelle John and Sharon White.
During the set, Clapton's long-time musical inspiration, JJ Cale, joined for five songs. Three were from their 2006 Grammy-Award winning album, *The Road To Escondido*.
Clapton and Cale recorded *The Road to Escondido* in 2006, but Cale's aversion to touring meant no supporting concerts. However, he showed up for one show near his San Diego home on March 15, 2007. This guest set became the heart of 2016's *Live in San Diego*, a double-disc live album released three years after Cale's death. It's Clapton's second tribute to Cale since his passing (the first was 2014's *The Breeze: An Appreciation of J.J. Cale*), and this mid-concert set might best show the love between the two.
## The Music
The set mainly features classic songs. The new “Anyway the Wind Blows” starts things off. The chemistry and affection between Clapton and Cale are evident, with Clapton following Cale's laid-back style, a nice contrast to the album's heavier blues.
Clapton, with a band including guitarists Doyle Bramhall II and Derek Trucks and drummer Steve Jordan, opens with five Derek & the Dominos numbers (like “Got to Get Better in a Little While,” unreleased during the band's active days). The album closes with blues covers, his hits “Wonderful Tonight” and “Layla,” and a performance of “Crossroads” with Robert Cray.
Rather than crowd-pleasing, Clapton focuses on the guitar, balancing the Cale showcase's easy grooves. It's one of his most satisfying live albums.
