## The 2014 Viennese Revival of Rudolf Nureyev's Masterpieces
In 2014, the Wiener Staatsoper brought back Rudolf Nureyev's classic ballet versions to mark the 50th anniversary of his early masterpiece. The Vienna State Ballet and Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera, under the baton of Alexander Ingram, presented Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake (Op. 20) and The Nutcracker.

Nureyev created his now-iconic Swan Lake in 1964. For its 50th anniversary revival, the Vienna State Opera added new sets and costumes. C Major released these two Tchaikovsky ballets straight from Vienna. As Austria's main classical ballet company, the Vienna State Ballet isn't often seen on home video, making these high-definition live performances a welcome treat.

The driving force behind these releases is Manuel Legris, a former Paris Opera Ballet étoile who has led the Viennese company since 2010. Legris, who was mentored by Nureyev in the 1980s, clearly admires the Russian superstar's legacy, and it shows in these productions.

## Swan Lake: A Timeless Lyric Tragedy
Swan Lake has been in the Vienna State Ballet's repertory since Nureyev first staged it there in 1964. For the 50th anniversary, it got a revamp with new sets by Luisa Spinatelli that enhance the lakeside scenes' visual splendor.

Nureyev made some notable changes to the ballet. He enhanced the principal male role, making the Prince the central character. He also believed, like Tchaikovsky, that Swan Lake doesn't have a happy ending. The score has been used liberally, with some music replaced, but Nureyev kept the essence of a timeless lyric tragedy.

Olga Esina as Odette-Odile and Vladimir Shishov as the Prince deliver magnificent performances. The Vienna State Opera Orchestra sounds great under the baton of Alexander Ingram.

## The Nutcracker: A Darker Narrative
The Nutcracker was a premiere for Vienna when Legris brought it from Paris in 2012. Nureyev continued the Soviet-Russian tradition, focusing on Clara and eliminating some magic. He added the theme of dreams, presenting the post-party narrative as a subconscious reflection.

Clara is danced by Ludmilla Konovalova throughout. The ballet has familiar scenes but in a darker setting. There are only minor score rearrangements.

## Production and Technical Aspects
The films, directed by Michael Beyer in a traditional way, offer great visuals with sharp HD transfers, rich colors, and detailed costumes. The DTS-HD MA 5.0 mix provides an impressive sound reproduction.

However, there are some issues. In The Nutcracker, stage noises are overwhelming in some quiet passages, and the Blu-ray discs lack bonus features with an unpractical main menu.

## Conclusion
The Viennese Swan Lake is well worth adding to your collection, even if you have other versions. Unfortunately, due to the sound issue, The Nutcracker can't receive the same wholehearted recommendation. But if you can overlook it, you're in for some enjoyable ballet evenings at home.
