## The Legendary Performance
In April 1974, right after releasing "Burn", Deep Purple's Mk III lineup - David Coverdale (vocals), Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Glenn Hughes (bass and vocals), Jon Lord (organ), and Ian Paice (drums) - took the stage at the iconic California Jam. This event birthed "arena rock", with Deep Purple at its core. For hard rock and heavy metal fans, it was like Woodstock.
Held on April 6, 1974, at the Ontario Motor Speedway in California, the jam attracted 250,000 people. It was a trial by fire for new members Coverdale and Hughes, who'd joined in '73, replacing Ian Gillan and Roger Glover.
The band was on fire, literally and figuratively. A backstage feud with the promoter led to a passionate performance. Opening with "Burn", Blackmore trashed guitars and amps, even hitting a camera. An onstage detonation created a wild fireball.
Amid the chaos, great music was made. The set focused on "Burn", with a few Mk II era songs. In 2016, Glenn Hughes recalled it as a defining moment, a testament to the Mk III lineup's grandeur.
