Most major choreographic interpretations of Shakespeare's *A Midsummer Night's Dream* are based on Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's music. The overture and music Mendelssohn wrote for the play have been used by choreographers like Marius Petipa (St. Petersburg, 1877), George Balanchine (New York City Ballet, 1962), Frederick Ashton (Royal Ballet, 1964), John Neumeier (Hamburg Ballet, 1977), and others.
## The Story
*A Midsummer Night's Dream* has three intersecting plotlines, centered around the upcoming wedding of Duke Theseus of Athens and Amazon queen Hippolyta. Two young men, Lysander and Demetrius, pursue one of Athens' most beautiful women, Hermia. Hermia loves Lysander, but her father forbids their marriage. The lovers decide to flee Athens to wed in a place where they won't be found. Furious Demetrius chases after them, and his admirer Helena follows him.
In the twilight of the forest and the labyrinth of their love relationships, magical transformations occur. Thanks to the mischievous elf Puck, a magical potion makes them randomly change their love interests. Meanwhile, the king and queen of the fairies, Oberon and Titania, who are quarreling, arrive in the same forest near Athens to attend Theseus and Hippolyta's wedding ceremony. The cause of their feud is Titania's young page boy, whom Oberon wants as his servant. And a group of Athenian craftsmen prepare a play about the ill-fated love of Pyramus and Thisbe for the wedding celebration and head to the forest to rehearse.
