# Anna Netrebko and Piotr Beczała Shine in New Met Opera Production
The Financial Times praises Netrebko for her “pure voice, full of expression and dynamic sensitivity.” The New Yorker notes Piotr Beczała in the role of Lensky sings “with extraordinary fervor.”
For the third time, Anna Netrebko is part of the opening season production at the New York Metropolitan Opera. This performance, which reaches audiences in over 634 countries via Met Opera film transmissions, is a crowd-pleaser.
The new production of Tchaikovsky's passionate opera is the first DVD/Blu-ray recording to feature Anna Netrebko in one of the most demanding roles in Russian opera. Netrebko's creation, showing the transformation of the withdrawn girl from the famous “letter-writing scene” into salon beauty, has been highly praised for its dramatic truth and musical lyricism.
Polish tenor Piotr Beczała has received rave reviews for his interpretation of the lovesick poet Lensky, Onegin's friend and rival. The musical director of this grand Russian opera is Valery Gergiev, the head of the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg.
The new production is produced by Deborah Warner, and the Met spectacle is directed by the multi-awarded actress Fiona Shaw. She moves the opera's action from around 1820, when Pushkin's poem was written, to the more psychologically intense era around 1870 when the opera was created.
The set design follows Tatiana's journey from the lonely country home of her youth to the bustling St. Petersburg ballroom. Her final encounter with Onegin takes place in a stormy Russian landscape scene.
Charismatic Polish baritone Mariusz Kwiecień debuts at the Met in the title role of the domineering Eugene Onegin, a role that has been his signature creation in many of the world's major opera houses.
