## The Underappreciated Gem of Verdi's Repertoire
Macbeth, often unjustly labeled as one of Verdi’s second-tier operas (below Otello and Falstaff), actually features excellent duets, solos, and well-timed ensemble pieces. Yet, it's rarely performed and even less frequently recorded.
## A Comparison with the Previous Film Version
The 1987 film version transferred to DVD in 2007 with Shirley Verrett and Leo Nucci was splendid, with unique visuals like topless simian witches, a musty castle, and moody lighting. However, in the age of HD and RF mikes, it's starting to show its age.
## Standout Performances in the 2015 Blu-ray
- **Zeljko Lucic as Macbeth**: Does a great job, especially at the start with his AK-47 and interactions with the witches. His baritone blends well with René Pape’s bass in “Due vaticini.”
- **Anna Netrebko as Lady Macbeth**: Her double aria “Vieni! t’affretta” is captivating. She's visually transformed and her singing is consistently dramatic. Her “Una macchia” is a standout scene, performed under a swinging lamp.
- **Witches' Chorus**: Dressed as 1930s shoppers, they bring a unique take. With about thirty on stage, the chorus is more resonant than ever.
## The Downside of Audience Applause
While the Blu-ray has better sound than the old version, the inclusion of audience applause is intrusive. Eliminating it or recording the dress rehearsal could enhance the viewing experience.
Verdi's Macbeth on Blu-ray (2015) has much to offer opera lovers. Despite the applause issue, it's a must-have for its great performances and fresh take on a classic opera. —Peter Bates
