## The Magic of Musical Time Travel
The “time machine” in this recording brings Percy Grainger’s original performance back to life. Conducted by Rolf Gupta, the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra joins in for a modern surround-sound experience. Edvard Grieg himself was highly impressed with Grainger’s interpretation, saying, “I had to become sixty-four years old to hear Norwegian piano music interpreted so understandingly and brilliantly. He breaks new ground for himself, for me, and for Norway. And then this enchanting, profound, serious, and childlike naturalness! What a joy to gain a young friend with such qualities!”
In 2007, Rolf Gupta gave the first Norwegian performance of Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor, with the legendary Australian pianist Percy Grainger (1882 - 1961) as the posthumous soloist. The Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra accompanies Grainger’s unique take on the concerto. Additionally, Øyvind Bjorå and Rex Lawson perform Grieg’s Violin Sonata in C minor, and the recording includes Grieg’s own performances of some Lyric Pieces. These previously unavailable performances are now a treat for music lovers.
## The Instruments of Time
Two special instruments made these musical encounters possible. Grainger plays on a Duo-Art reproducing piano, an analogue precursor to the computer, powered by an electric suction pump and controlled by perforated paper rolls. Grieg is brought back through a foot-pedalled pianola played by Rex Lawson. Both were set in front of a Steinway concert grand piano to re-perform the magic of 1921 (Grainger) and 1906 (Grieg).
