## The Event
The sold-out Europakonzert 2017 at the Paphos medieval castle square was a hit. Despite the hot midday sun at the unsheltered venue, 1,500 attendees gave standing ovations.

Every year, the Berliner Philharmoniker celebrate their founding day (May 1st, 1892) in a culturally significant European city. This year, they chose Paphos, the mythical birthplace of Aphrodite.

Latvian conductor Mariss Jansons returned to lead, and principal clarinettist Andreas Ottensamer was the soloist.

In front of the Byzantine castle, the orchestra played works by Weber and Dvořák, full of lyrical charm. Ottensamer's take on Weber‘s Clarinet Concerto was special. It's more elaborate than Mozart's due to Weber's collaboration with clarinettist Joseph Heinrich Bärmann. The concert ended with Dvořák‘s upbeat 8th Symphony.
